ECommerce Website Mind Map
About the eCommerce Website Mind Map
2013-01-23: Updated mind map to v0.3. I recommend getting either the native itmz file if you have iThoughts or the pdf format so that you can follow the links.
I'm a big advocate of mind maps as an efficient brainstorming and note taking format (My preferred format is iThoughtsHD on the iPad or XMind on the PC - download links for various formats below).
Back in 2012 I started a mindmap of the things I was working on or thinking about in my day to day roles managing ecommerce websites. Over time it's expanded into "a few hundred things to think about if you want your ecommerce website to be competitive".
I decided to publish this as there are a few groups of people who may find it useful. Please do remember this is not meant to be an exhaustive list of elements that make up an eCommerce business, and like everything on this site it comes with the standard disclaimer that I may change, update it or republish at any point.
Who might benefit?
Merchants and business owners
There is a lot to running an eCommerce website these days. The more of this stuff that you are aware of and keeping an eye on, or better yet ensuring you have people keeping an eye on for you, the more competitive your website can be. It could also save you a bunch of cash in consultancy fees - some consultants I've had the displeasure of dealing with will charge you a buttload of money to basically tell you these are the types of thing you should be thinking about doing. Of course there are some good consultants out there and I know of a few myself so if you need help understanding or implementing some of this stuff please contact me and I'll hook you up.
Agencies & Developers
We know how it is when you are deep in code - it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. This could give you an overview of some of your clients concerns or what the marketing department might be up to and may even help you develop solutions that add more value across multiple channels.
There shouldn't be much in here that's new to you but it might serve as a handy prompt or discussion format for you and your clients.
Come on it's got to be more useful than an infographic right?
